Argylle, Matthew Vaughn’s newest project is set to make around $15-20 million in its opening weekend, according to Variety. The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Sam Rockwell, and Catherine O’Hara, among others. The budget for the film was $200 million, which may make it seem like a financial flop when factoring in its opening weekend numbers, but its financier Apple, seems ready to take a few risks to break into the world of blockbuster films.
Variety stated, “Of course, Apple doesn’t want to be associated with underperforming blockbusters. (It would take roughly $500 million in global ticket sales — a threshold that less than 10 films have reached in 2022 and 2023 — for a movie of this size and scale to break even at a traditional studio.) But Apple is one of the deepest-pocketed companies in the world. With a $3 trillion market cap, it doesn’t need to measure success in the same way as other Hollywood players. For now, these robust theatrical releases are seen as a potential competitive advantage to lure top talent and generate buzz for the streaming service, Apple TV+.”
Unfortunately for the film’s stars and its future at the box office, reviews have not been glowing. According to CBR, “Ahead of Argylle‘s theatrical premiere, the film’s early reviews from critics have resulted in a record low at Rotten Tomatoes for director Matthew Vaughn.” Vaughn is most well-known for the Kingsman series, but it seems like his newest shot at a spy film, may be a miss.
