After Justice League failed to meet expectations at the box office and received a hollow response from audiences, DC has been in need of a hero to rescue their reputation and make up their losses. Aquaman seems to have succeeded in doing so, as it has now officially made more money than Justice League since its December 21 North American release.
Justice League made about $657 million worldwide and now Aquaman has now made over $750 million globally. If it stays on track, it will be the first film from the DCEU to gross over $1 billion. Wonder Woman didn’t quite hit that goal, earning around $820 million worldwide while being loved by fans and critics alike. Aquaman isn’t praised as highly by critics or fans, but is still better received than Suicide Squad, Justice League, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Warner Bros. has not announced any official plans for a sequel, but it’s looking more than likely at this point in time. Aquaman has proven himself worthy, and now DC can move forward on franchise plans with confidence. Things aren’t looking as great for Batman and Superman, as Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill may not return to their respective franchises. Now Aquaman and Wonder Woman are keeping DC afloat.
DC’s next releases are Shazam! (April 5, 2019) and Birds of Prey (February 2020), so we will see if these highly-anticipated films can live up to their expectations and keep DC going strong.
