‘Aquaman’ Defeats Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman in Box Office for DC Cinematic Universe.

DC and Warner Brothers’ Box Office has been rather shaky with their recent comic book movie affairs. Competing with the likes of Marvel, while DC has had some hits in the past with Wonder Woman, they have also under performed with their big cinematic crossovers, not even coming close to the box office success of Marvel’s biggest films – most evidently with Justice League, being one of the biggest box office disappointments in recent memory. Things are looking up however, as Aquaman has not only been a financially stable hit for DC, but also has become the highest grossing film worldwide in their new cinematic universe.

Within a month, Aquaman has grossed $887 million worldwide, surpassing Batman vs. Superman‘s $873 million gross. Domestically the film has gross $238 million, which is still behind not only Wonder Woman‘s domestic gross of $412 million, but also still behind Batman vs. Superman, Suicide Squad and even Man of Steel for the time being. What really made the undersea hero such a hit is its connection with the overseas movie market as Aquaman has made $649 million alone outside the U.S. China in particular contributed with $279 million to it’s gross, making it the second biggest superhero movie to be released there behind Infinity War.

With the James Waan superhero film coming close to a billion dollars in the box office, it is clear that DC will continue with more Aquaman films in the future. Not only that, but there could be some strong consideration for more solo-outings for DC heroes in general, with two of the biggest movies from them being solo films, while their big team up movies under performed. Only time will tell if this trend of solo DC movies actually becomes a thing especially with Shazam! coming out in April of 2019. Regardless, this is huge step forward for DC Superheroes reaching almost the level of Marvel.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
