Apollo 13, director Ron Howard’s historical space drama about the titular Apollo mission that became one of the most intensive rescue missions in NASA history, will be re-released theatrically by Universal Pictures on September 19th. IMAX screenings will run until September 25th. The film stars Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, and Kevin Bacon. At its release in 1995, the film received critical acclaim, was nominated for nine Academy Awards, and won 2 Academy Awards for editing and sound.
This will be the second time Apollo 13 will be re-released in IMAX theaters. The first time was in 2002, when the film became the first live-action movie to be digitally remastered with IMAX DMR technology. This 2002 re-release, titled Apollo 13: The IMAX Experience, had 13 minutes cut from its original runtime to accommodate the projection limitations of IMAX theaters at the time. This means that this upcoming re-release will be the first time Apollo 13 will be screened in its entirety in IMAX theaters.
In a statement, director Ron Howard had this to say about the upcoming re-release:
“Apollo 13 is a testament to human resilience, ingenuity, and teamwork in the face of impossible odds. As we celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary, I’m reminded of how relevant those themes remain today. This re-release is not only a celebration of that incredible mission and the people behind it, but also a proud milestone for all of us at Imagine. It was a defining moment in our journey as storytellers, and we’re thrilled that Universal and IMAX have made it possible to share it with a new generation.”
