PureFlix has made a name for themselves as being the biggest Christian film studio in recent memory. Despite what some may say about their films, there is a clear following for films intended for a Christian audience. Their newest film, Unplanned, discusses the controversial topic of abortion and adopts the Christian point of view against abortion. The film opened this past weekend and debuted rather strongly for a small film of this caliber.
Unplanned managed to have the second biggest opening for a film from PureFlix behind the first, God’s Not Dead. The film opened at the number 5 spot at the box office with $6.1 million dollars in 1,059 theaters across the U.S. The faith-based film opened about $1 million below God’s Not Dead which opened with $7.6 million back in 2014. This serves as a good boost for the film as Unplanned was initially expected to open with $3 million on its opening weekend. Thanks to the film’s popularity in the midwest and southern parts of the U.S., the film ended up exceeding box office expectations.
The directors of the film, Chuck Konzelman and Cary Soloman, were very pleased with the film’s recent financial performance. They stated, “We are so pleased that the American people have responded with such an enormous outpouring of support at the box office. It humbles us and we look forward to seeing what happens in the weeks ahead.” Only time will tell if the film sticks around in the coming weeks but it certainly made for a good debut for a smaller picture.
