Evangeline Lilly, who has played the role of Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp in multiple MCU films, including the Ant-Man trilogy and Avengers: Endgame, has taken to Instagram to react to mass layoffs of 1,000 employees that occurred at multiple Disney-owned studios earlier this week, including the entire Visual Development team at Marvel Studios.
The post began with a brief clip from a TikTok video covering the layoffs. Lilly then explains that she reached out to her friend Andy Park, a former artist at Marvel Studios, who confirmed the news to her and revealed that he was one of the entire visual development team at the studio who had been let go. Lilly says in the video,
I can’t quite believe that Disney have let go of the artists who have brought the current Marvel Universe to life through their imagination and their genius.
Lilly then lets out her frustration of Marvel replacing these artists with A.I, saying that the A.I. will “take their designs and take what those artists created and use it to create iterations of that [creation].”
I am so sorry, Andy [Park]. I am so sorry to the artists who were let go and the 1,000 at Disney who were fired. And in particularly, the entire team at Marvel [Studios] who have been considered obsolete now after building the Marvel empire.
Lilly concludes the video by saying to her audience,
If you are a huge fan of Marvel, just take a moment today to think about them [the artists at Marvel], to send a prayer for them, to honor them. To honor the people that created the world that you fell in love with. That human invention, these were human creations, and they shouldn’t be stolen by tech giants so that their robots can replicate them.I think it’s disgusting and horrible, and I just want to stand with all of the artists, and I’m so sorry, and I love you guys.
