Annie Awards Nominees Announced with Animated Superheroes and Sequels

Award season is coming up very shortly with many movies finally getting their recognition with numerous campaigns for possible Oscar Nominations. The Animation industry is no exception when recognizing the remarkable talent that some of the very best filmmakers in Animation have done during past years as the 46th annual Annie Awards have announced their nominations.

As with many prior years, the trend of Disney and/or Pixar taking the lead of nominations continues with Disney Animation’s and Pixar’s hit sequels Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet being the two leading the nominations with Incredibles having 11 nominations and Ralph having 10 nominations. Both are also included in the most significant award which is the Best Animated Feature, however there is still some good competition for that title this year.

Alongside Disney’s and Pixar’s contributions, Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs, Aardman’s  Early Man, and Sony’s Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse are also nominated for the prestigious Best Animated Feature Category along with various other nominations. Even despite Disney’s and Pixar’s  recognition in the animation industry, it’s still possible that these other three movies could win big time as there is a lot going for each one of these films. Particularly Isle of Dogs  being a critically success and from one of the most prominent names in the film industry with Wes Anderson and Into the Spider-Verse being already a huge critical success, currently holding a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and said to be a huge game changer for animated films.

In regards to other Animation news regarding the Annies, famous awards like the Winsor McCay award and June Foray award will also be presented and given to many talents in the industry. Director and Animator Ralph Eggleston, Voice Actress Andrea Romano and Frank Braxton (posthumously) will be the ones to receive the Winsor McCay award while also posthumously, animator Adam Burke will be given the June Foray award. Not to mention, ASIFA volunteer Jason Jones will be given a certificate of merit and Ub Iwerks Award for Blender Open Source Animation Software will be given to Dutch software developer Ton Roosendaal.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
