Annette Bening Joins ‘Captain Marvel’

Four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening is joining the cast of Captain Marvel, alongside Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn – and Brie Larson as the titular Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers. The Hollywood Reporter first picked up the news. Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace return to their Guardians of the Galaxy roles as Ronan and Korath, respectively.

Bening’s exact role has been kept a secret, but we know she’s some kind of scientist. She recently starred in Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool and an adaptation of the Anton Chekhov play The Seagull.

Directors of the 2015 drama Mississippi Grind, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will be directing Captain Marvel, which is Marvel’s first film to feature a woman in the leading role.

A female-led Marvel film has been long-awaited, with fans clamoring for everything from a Black Widow feature to a movie about Black Panther’s Shuuri. While we wait for Captain Marvel to hit theaters in 2019, there’s always season two of Jessica Jones on Netflix to tide us over, as well as Margaret Stohl’s run of The Mighty Captain Marvel comics.

If you haven’t yet seen Infinity War, keep an eye out for Captain Marvel’s big teaser in the movie, and you can catch Annette Bening in The Seagull, which is out in theaters tomorrow.
