Anne Hathaway (Interstellar) is set to star in the new monster movie Colossal from writer/director Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes) according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hathaway will play Gloria, who moves back to her hometown after losing her fiancé and job in New York. After she moves back, a giant lizard-like kaiju, attacks Tokyo and Gloria realizes she has a strange connection to the attacks through her mind; she must then try to find a way to stop the destruction. The movie has been characterized as Godzilla meets Adaptation.
While this will be the most mainstream movie of Vigalondo’s filmography, it is definitely in line with his other work. His 2007 film Timecrimes followed a man who kickstarts some grave consequences by traveling back in time one-hour. More recently, he directed the thriller Open Windows with Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) and Sasha Grey (The Girlfriend Experience).
This marks a return of sorts to geeky fanboy culture for Hathaway, who previously played Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. She recently finished filming the sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass and the Nancy Meyers comedy The Intern, the latter of which will hit theaters this fall.
Colossal is being produced by Voltage Pictures who will pitch the project to distributors at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
