Just before production was supposed to begin on the movie about Roger Ailes, the production company, Annapurna Pictures decided to drop the project completely. The news comes shortly after it was announced that Malcolm McDowell would be joining the cast as Rupert Murdoch.
An article at Deadline Hollywood has speculated the reason the company dropped out of the project is because the budget for the film had gotten out of control. Apparently the film was going over budget even before production began. However, the sources over at Deadline claim that there were other reasons that led to Annapurna Pictures to back out of the project.
The movie, which is going under the working title Fair and Balanced is still being backed by its co-financier, BRON Studios, and currently the movie is searching for another co-financier, so the project might not be quite dead yet. The script for Fair and Balanced was written by Charles Randolph, writer of The Big Short, and Jay Roach is set to direct it. The star studded cast includes Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon, and John Lithgow as the notorious Roger Ailes.
