Anna Paquin defenders, stop your Twitter trolling now. The Oscar-winning actress, famously known for her roles in the X-Men films as Rogue and in HBO’s True Blood, has said she’s “fine” with her character from The Irishman only speaking seven words. The three and a half hour film features Paquin as Robert De Niro’s character’s daughter.
Paquin revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that she is endeared by the social media uproar which followed the discovery of her character’s extremely low line count, but that it’s “not really necessary.” She went on to state, “I have such a tiny little role in the film, and I was so excited to get to be a part of it in the first place, and all of this [awards recognition] is just the icing on the cake.”
Despite The Irishman receiving extremely positive reviews, audiences have criticized director Martin Scorcese’s casting of the actress, who won an Oscar in 1993 at just age 11 for her performance in The Piano, for what feels like a waste of talent on such a tiny role. However, Paquin has affirmed she was happy to take it, stating she “just [couldn’t] picture any actor on the planet going, ‘Yeah, I don’t want to work with Martin Scorsese and every single living legend in our field.'”
To see all seven of Paquin’s lines in a 3+ hour film, audiences can continue to stream The Irishman on Netflix.
