The anime movie Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train made headlines for breaking box office records in Japan. Not only was Demon Slayer Japan’s number 1 movie of 2020, but it has also become the country’s highest grossing movie of all time. In order to earn the number one spot Demon Slayer beat out Japan’s previously highest grossing movie, Spirited Away which was directed by legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki. Spirited Away is now the second highest growing movie in Japan followed by James Cameron’s Titanic.
As of December 27th Demon Slayer earned more than 32,478,895,850 yen, which according to Comicbook.com that is $314 million US. Japan’s highest grossing anime movie globally is still Your Name, but that could change. The movie has been breaking records, and even its theme song was awarded Japan’s song of the year.
Now according to Anime News Network the movie has remained in Japan’s number one movie spot for 12 weeks or 3 months in a row. The movie initially released in Japan on October 16, 2020. The movie is expected to get a theatrical release in the United States sometime in early 2021. The production companies Funimation and Aniplex of America will be in charge of the movie’s American theatrical release.
