Dope and The Get Down star Shameik Moore has been cast to play our friendly neighborhood web-slinger in Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming fully animated Spider-Man film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
While Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is set to be the live-action wall-crawler in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers franchise, Moore will be voicing the animated Miles Morales, a half-African-American/half Latino youth that has taken on the Spider-Mantle in an alternate universe.
In addition to Moore, Ray Donovan star Liev Schreiber is also attached to voice the film’s villain. Odds are, it is not Schreiber’s previous Marvel villain role of Sabretooth, from 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street team Phil Lord and Chris Miller will produce the film. Lord also attached to write the script with Bob Persichetti (The Little Prince), who will also co-direct with Rise of the Guardians director, Peter Ramsey.
Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli and introduced in 2011, the character of Morales has become immensely popular with fans and has made appearances in the mainstream Marvel comic canon and in ancillary Marvel projects. The character previously appeared in animated form in Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man, where he was voiced by Donald Glover. Glover was strongly campaigned to play Morales in live-action, but now has another role in this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
