Actor and director Andy Serkis’ anticipated animated adaptation of Animal Farm has unveiled the first footage of the film, as well as announced a confirmed voice cast. The film will be produced by Aniventure and distributed globally by Cinesite, known for Warfare, The Witcher, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Animal Farm is set to be released on June 9th, 2025, for a limited audience at a festival. The film will closely follow the plot of George Orwell’s classic 1945 novel, in which many different types of farm animals start a revolution against their human captors with the goal of creating a society based on equality for everyone. However, things go awry when the power starts to shift into the hands of a few. The animated film is described as a modern reimagining that retains Orwell’s main themes of power, manipulation, and control.
The film includes many actors voicing the animals. Leading the cast is Seth Rogen as Napoleon, the protagonist pig who eventually takes control of the farm. Playing Napoleon’s rival is Kieran Culkin as Snowball, and Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo will play Squealer, the leading propagandist for the regime. The ensemble cast also features Owen Teague, Kathryn Hunter, and David Bradley. Serkis is directing the film and co-writing the script with Nicholas Stoller, alongside Serkis’ Planet of the Apes partner Rupert Wyatt, who was the initial developer of the film. This has been a decade-long project, as Serkis first announced his involvement with the adaptation over ten years ago and has called Animal Farm a deeply personal project.
The first footage, screened at the 2025 Annecy Animation Festival, featured detailed CGI animation. Most notably, the balance between realism and stylization is being praised. It included scenes of the animal revolution, the construction of the windmill, and moments highlighting the shift from unity to authoritarian rule. While a theatrical release date has not yet been announced, the film is rumored to come between July and December. Animal Farm marks another film in the discography of Serkis’ career in performance capture and animation, following past roles in The Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes franchise.
