Screenwriter Amy Wang has confirmed that Crazy Rich Asians 2 is still in active development, although no release date has been set. In an interview with The Direct at the SXSW premiere, Wang stated that “as far as [she knows], it is still going to happen.” However, the directors are working to “make the script perfect and great,” and that takes time. The goal for the sequel is to surpass the original.

Amy Wang was not originally the screenwriter, as she replaced Daniel Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim after Lim departed in 2019 due to pay-equity disputes. Now that Wang is set to write the script for the sequel, it marks a new chapter in the film’s script process.

Director Jon M. Chu has continuously expressed his high hopes and standards for the sequel. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in November 2024, Chu made it evident that adapting Kevin Kwan’s second novel, China Rich Girlfriend, involves major structural shifts. He’s unwilling to go ahead with the film unless the script meets—or better yet, exceeds—not only his expectations but also those of the fans, set by the first film.

After the original’s success in 2018, Warner Bros. quickly announced in August of the same year that a sequel would be happening. Progress has been slow due to several factors, including Lim’s exit, extensive rewrites, industry strikes, and the script’s high expectations. The project’s development remained relatively private for almost seven years—until this spring, when Wang’s statements offered a glimpse of hope for fans patiently waiting.

Overall, Crazy Rich Asians 2 is still in the works, with Wang leading the screenplay and, right beside her, Jon M. Chu waiting for a script that will outdo the original. Though the timeline remains unclear, one thing is certain: the creative team is committed to getting it right.
