Today in intriguing casting prospects, Amy Schumer appears be to be talks to headline Sony’s upcoming live-action movie Barbie. The upcoming film, based on Mattel’s globally famed doll, is looking to put high-concept gloss on the Barbie brand. Which makes Schumer’s potential casting all the more interesting considering the brand of Emmy winning comedian-actress is considerably bluer, due to raunchy stand-up, the Comedy Central series Inside Amy Schumer and last year’s R-rated comedy Trainwreck.
The long-gestating film is being handled by Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, and Amy Pascal, each serving as producers and appears to be taking a rather meta-approach for the big screen. The concept was conceived and written by Hilary Winston – though there’s a suggestion out there that if Schumer signs on, she will re-tool the screenplay alongside her sister Kim Caramele – and sets Barbie in a fantastical realm akin to movies like Splash, Big and Enchanted. The story begins with Barbie in the perfectly idealized Barbieland, until she gets excised for not being perfect enough. Thrown out in the “real world,” Barbie learns her differences may be her greatest asset.
The concept appears delicately crafted for a product that premiered in 1959, brings in nearly $3 billion annually in revenue around the world and yet has come into controversy over the years on matters of body image and race. Schumer’s casting, if indeed it pans out, may look to further and contort the Barbie brand into altogether different terrain. The film has been on Sony’s books for a while now and is slated for theatrical release in the summer of 2018.
Last seen in Trainwreck in the summer of 2015, a film she wrote the screenplay for and earned a Golden Globe nod for Best Actress in Comedy, Schumer is next slated to hit the screens in an upcoming, and still untitled, mother-daughter comedy alongside Goldie Hawn as well as the PTSD film Thank You for Your Service starring Miles Teller (Whiplash).
