Variety reports that Amy Adams is currently in the midst of negotiations to headline The True American, the adaptation of a real-life story involving a Texas man who murdered two convenience store employees in the aftermath of 9/11, also involving a man he attacked, Raisuddin Bhuiyan, who served on the Bangladesh Air Force and immigrated to The United States. The movie gathers its source material from a book by Anand Giridharadas.
Adams would star alongside Mark Ruffalo, who is in final talks to play Mark Stroman, the aforementioned murderer who went on a revenge-inspired killing spree in the days following the events of 9/11. Stroman shot three individuals, killing two, believing that they were from the Middle East. The men were actually all from south Asia.
The one surviving victim, Bhuiyan, will be played by Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) if final negotiations are successful. Bhuiyan sued to stop the execution of Stroman, believing that he deserved to be forgiven for his actions. The movie will presumably tell the story from his perspective (as the book did).
If the stars align (pun intended), The True American would be the next film project for Adams, who is currently focusing on her upcoming HBO limited series Sharp Objects. She will also be seen alongside Sam Rockwell in the Dick Cheney drama Backseat, which should hit theaters on December 21st.
