The official red band trailer for Michael Cuesta’s (TV’s Homeland) American Assassin is quite a sight to behold. Action-packed, emotionally fueled, and politically relevant, Hollywood’s latest novel adaptation looks to be the movie event of late summer.
The official plot summary, provided by CBS Films, is as follows: “American Assassin follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.”
The film is based on the lengthy book series by Vince Flynn and was adapted for the screen by Stephen Schiff (TV’s The Americans). Based on the expertly crafted action sequences on The Americans and Cuesta’s work on Homeland, the potential for American Assassin grows exponentially on top of the additional talent being brought by the likes of Oscar-nominee Keaton.
Coming straight off of the Maze Runner series, it makes perfect sense for O’Brien to cash in on his rising action star status. Based on the trailer, O’Brien fills the young assassin’s shoes with ease. See the red band trailer below and catch the film in theaters on September 15.
