AMC Sees Huge Surge In Premium Format Ticket Purchases Thanks To ‘The Odyssey’

Even well over a month before its release, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is already making waves at the box office. With the premium format tickets going on sale this past Tuesday, theater chain AMC saw the highest advance sales for those formats in four years.

Dating as far back as The 8th Century BC, The Odyssey is one of the oldest tales in human history. In the latest imagining of the story, Matt Damon plays King Odysseus, decorated hero of the Trojan War, on his journey back home to Ithaca. Before he can return home to his family, he’s faced with countless obstacles of mythical proportions, as the gods decide to test what kind of man he is.

When looking at AMC in particular, they have no shortage of premium formats to offer their viewers. Between their IMAX partnership, as well as offerings in Dolby and PRIME, viewers have plenty of choices to select how they want to view big blockbusters. Pair that with Nolan, a big time advocate for movie going and pushing the boundaries of innovative filmmaking, and the draw for Odyssey presales was bound to be electric.

However, as Screenrant noted, the crowds buying tickets for The Odyssey was more than what AMC anticipated. When the tickets went on sale, exclusively for the premium formats, AMC wasn’t able to handle the massive online traffic, with the website going down in the wake of the massive demand. Later on, Deadline reported that once fans could secure their seats, the total revenue in presales amounted to the highest AMC has seen for a premium format selection in years.
