Leos Carax, the French filmmaker behind the wild cult hit Holy Motors (2012), is making his English-language debut with a new music-filled drama called Annette, set to star Adam Driver and Rihanna. Variety reports that Amazon Studios has picked up the film, acquiring both U.S. and Canadian rights to the title for the project set to start production shortly. With it’s acquisition of Annette, Amazon continues in acquiring intriguing art-house entries from internationally renowned auteur filmmakers.
Filming for Annette is expected to take place in multiple international locations, including Los Angeles with screenplay (as well as original songs) penned by Ron and Russell Mael, founders of the art-rock band Sparks. Originally, Rooney Mara (Carol) was expected to co-lead the film alongside Driver yet dropped out due to scheduling conflicts; it has been newly confirmed that Rihanna will take her place. The project joins a slew of potentially plum film projects for the singer-songwriter which include the upcoming Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and Ocean’s Eight. Driver, last seen on screen in Martin Scorsese’s Silence and Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson (another Amazon Studios acquisition), will soon appear in Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
We will stay tuned the latest on Annette.
