Nicolas Winding Refn’s (Drive) latest film, The Neon Demon has found a distributor in Amazon Studios which plans to release the film next summer, according to Variety.
The film stars Elle Fanning (About Ray) as an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles. After arriving, she encounters a group of women who will do anything they can to absorb her youth and vitality. The film also stars Keanu Reeves (John Wick), Christina Hendricks (Fist Fight), and Jenna Malone (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2).
Refn re-teamed with Lene Borglum (Valhalla Rising) who worked as a producer on Refn’s last movie Only God Forgives. The film has been in development since November 2014. Since he joined the project, Refn was quoted as saying he noticed he was “surrounded and dominated by women,” and “a sudden urge was planted (in him) to make a horror film about vicious beauty.”
The acquisition marks the latest move by Amazon Studios who has been joining streaming rival Netflix in producing original films. The studio produced the latest from Spike Lee (Inside Man), Chiraq as well as the Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters) starrer Desired Moments and Elvis & Nixon. The studio will release the film in theaters before bringing it to their streaming service.
We’ll have more on the movie, including a definitive release date, as information become available.
