Amazon Acquires MGM in $8.5 Million Deal

CNN reports that Amazon has officially closed a deal to acquire Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), one of the biggest studios in Hollywood, for a sum of $8.5 million. MGM’s library includes upwards of 4,000 movies and 17,000 TV series which are now set to be included in the Amazon Prime Video streaming service library. Some of the studio’s biggest series include the James Bond franchise, Rocky, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Legally Blonde.

“MGM has a nearly century-long legacy of producing exceptional entertainment, and we share their commitment to delivering a broad slate of original films and television shows to a global audience,” said Mike Hopkins, SVP of Prime Video and Amazon Studios.

The deal went through without a hitch from the Federal Trade Commission and European Union’s trust commission with both organizations believing there is no competition concern. In exchange for the large content acquisition, Amazon is anticipated to help MGM stay relevant in the modern, fast-paced, streamer-driven environment that is dominating the industry.

Amazon Prime Video users can expect an increase in content available in their libraries in the coming months as the deal is finalized and titles are uploaded to the streaming library.
