The fictionalized account of the infamous Amanda Knox story titled The Face of an Angel has been acquired by Screen Media Films for distribution. The film, screened at the Toronto Film Festival, will be released to a wider audience in 2015.Knox was originally found guilty of the murder of Meredith Kercher in Italy and then was ruled not guilty in her appeal. Earlier this year, a new guilty verdict came from a retrial, along with a 28 year sentence which may or may not result in extradition or jail time here in the states, but the film itself won’t lose any of its relevance to the case as it is, in theory, about a fictionalized trial only based on a book about the Knox proceedings.
The book in question is Angel Face: Sex, Murder and the Inside Story of Amanda Knox by Italian journalist Barbie Latza Nadeau. Director Michael Winterbottom’s development of the film involved changing all of the relevant names in the case. It stars Kate Beckinsale, Daniel Brühl, Cara Delevingne, and Valerio Mastandrea. Those unfamiliar with the case may have trouble figuring out who plays who before seeing the film in its entirety. Even from the teaser covered by mxdwn Movies back in February, seen here, it is difficult to say who will play the roles corresponding to Amanda Knox and Meredith Kercher. Daniel Brühl plays the filmmaker covering the case alongside Kate Beckinsale’s journalist character.
Even without knowing all the details about the case itself, the film could present a unique view into journalism and the law, particularly when it comes to the idea of innocence, guilt, and how the media warps the public’s perception of either.
