A new teaser for the movie Alien: Romulus from producer Ridley Scott and director/writer Fede Alvarez has been released, and fans are in for a truly terrifying sci-fi experience. The trailer delivers the same horror and supernatural gore that the original 1979 film featured, but with a new cast and visual direction from Alvarez.
Alien: Romulus is the seventh installment in the Alien franchise. The film takes place in the 57 year span between the original 1979 Ridley Scott film and the 1986 James Cameron version with the film set 20 years after the original.
The film follows a group of young space explorers that discover a frighteningly ghoulish life form while on an abandoned space station. The film features a group of fresh Hollywood stars with Cailee Spaeny, who recently starred in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, and David Jonsson, known for Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy starring in the film. The cast also includes Isabela Merced (The Last Of Us), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), Aileen Wu.
Fede Alvarez, who directs the movie, wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues. The pair frequently co-write together with their prior writing credit being the screenplay for Don’t Breathe 2. The screenplay features characters from Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett’s original Alien script.
Variety sat down with Alvarez to discuss the making of the movie and his vision for the new installment. When asked about his inspiration for the film, Alvarez told Variety, “But for me, it was really taking it back to its roots. I wanted to travel back not just to the style of the original movies, but to the genre of the original movies. I really wanted to go back to the sheer horror of the first film, and to take those elements of thriller that “Aliens” has, and “Alien 3” has as well. We went to crazy extents to keep it pure to the filmmaking techniques of the first movie. But if anybody’s worried, “Is it going to be too retro?” Don’t worry, 2023 will pour through every window. There’s no way to stop the modernity of filmmaking. And from that combination of the best of the classics and the best of today, then you have something new.”
The film promises to be a mix of nostalgia from the original films, and a new taste of what 21st century movies can do for the sci-fi genre. The film is set to hit theaters August 16, 2024.
