A new female-led film noir thriller following the likes of Atomic Blonde from last year is coming to fruition through Netflix, and the team working on the film has signed on two up-and-coming actresses to join the cast. Alicia Vikander, the face of Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider, and Riley Keough, who had standout performance last year in Logan Lucky, are both finalizing contracts to join the cast of The Earthquake Bird, which gathers its source material from the identically-named book by Susanna Jones, according to Deadline.
The Earthquake Bird follows the story of a young woman in Tokyo, Japan. Though she’s embroiled in a love triangle, it’s the least of her problems. Her friend has disappeared, and authorities believe she’s the real culprit. Stuck in horrifying circumstances, she has to wonder: who could have blamed the murder on her, and why is no one on her side about the situation?
The film is to be directed by Wash Westmoreland, who also wrote the script for the film. Westmoreland most recently worked on Colette, which is set to release in October this year. Netflix picked up the rights to the film after it failed to gain steam at Amazon Studios. The film is set to begin production sometime in May, taking actors to Sado Island and Tokyo.
