Alfred Molina recently sat down with Variety and discussed details around his return as Doc Ock in Spider-Man: No Way Home as well as pointed out a huge issue people do not talk much about in The Irishman. After Molina’s interview, this is the first confirmation by parties involved with the latest installment of the Spider-Man franchise that any of these insane casting rumors are true. However, reputable news sources around the film have confirmed the news months ago.
On his return the 67-year old actor said, ““It was wonderful. It was very interesting going back after 17 years to play the same role, given that in the intervening years, I now have two chins, a wattle, crow’s feet and a slightly a slightly dodgy lower back.” It’s fun to see that Molina can laugh at the aging process we all share.
However, more so than his enjoyment, he revealed some interesting details on Otto Octavius’ return. Specifically that he is playing the same Otto from the 2004 Spider-man 2 film, and it takes place near moments after his drowning. The actor was confused to say the least.
To quell his confusion, Jon Watts, the director of this Spider-Man trilogy, got Molina up to date. Molina retelling the tale saying,
“He just looked at me, and said, ‘Did you see what we did to Bob Downey Jr. and Sam Jackson?’” This also confirms that Molina will be digitally de-aged in order to play the same exact Otto and not an alternate universe version of the character.
Molina also said what I have been thinking about The Irishman de-aging for the last year and half. “They made Robert De Niro’s face younger, but when he was fighting, he looked like an older guy. He looked like an old guy! That’s what that’s what worried me about doing it again.”
Let’s hope Marvel does a slightly better job with Molina’s fight sequences. However, this is huge news and confirms even more than before that all the multi-verse theories and castings, including Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, and Jaime Foxx are all true. Though Marvel Studios and Sony have still yet to comment. Which honestly is pretty endearing at this stage, and hopefully some people can still be surprised by these massive reveals.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to hit theaters with an insane storyline and cast on December 17, 2021.
