Rumors have been swirling about an upcoming live-action Spider-verse film since the announcement of Jamie Foxx’s return to the character of Electro in the next Spider-Man film led by Tom Holland. Now, those rumors are all but confirmed as more names from the previous Spider-Man iterations are all coming back to the franchise.
Alfred Molina is confirmed to be returning to the role of Doctor Octopus, which he took on in 2004’s Spider-Man 2. Collider also reports that Tobey Maguire of that original Sam Raimi-directed trilogy is in final negotiations to return, as well as Kirsten Dunst as MJ.
From the Amazing Spider-Man films of 2012 and 2014, Andrew Garfield has been confirmed by Collider to be returning too, putting the total of Spider-Men at 3, including Tom Holland. News about Emma Stone‘s return to the role of Gwen Stacy is not yet confirmed.
Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home actors Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon and Tony Revolori are all on board for the sequel, which is currently in production. Benedict Cumberbatch will also be making another appearance in the film as Doctor Strange, making it quite the star-studded project.
The release date of this currently untitled third Spider-Man film, directed by Jon Watts, is set for Dec. 17, 2021.
