The new Brandon Cronenberg film Infinity Pool premiered in Sundance at midnight section this Saturday. Unfortunately, the screening showed an NC-17 cut of the film that will not be the one shown broadly in theaters. Instead, the feature will open in theaters on January 27 with an R-rating cut. Despite its strong content, the Sundance festival screening went well and had no notable walkouts. After, there was a Q&A session with Cronenberg and the cast where actor Alexander Skarsgard stated:
“There’s a lot of conformity and monotony when you read scripts…you’ve just seen the movie. It’s just crazy, crazy…Love it or hate it, but it’s rare to experience something like this as an actor”
Skarsgard loved the script to the point of becoming an executive producer. “It’s an indie film, and I wanted to do anything I could to help Brandon visualize it,” he said.
Infinity Pool was written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg, whose work tends to be described as science-fiction horror. He has previously directed two other films, Antiviral (2012) and Possessor (2020). Cronenberg is the son of recognized body horror director David Cronenberg. His style in some aspects seems to be inherited from his father, considering that it contains elements of body horror.
The feature follows an author (Skarsgard) visiting a resort in a fictional Country named Tolqa with his wife. He meets a fan played by Mia Goth and her husband. The couple will introduce them abruptly to hidden aspects of the resort. For example, Tola has a legal system where foreigners can have a clone made to take their place in the execution line. This opens a new world to the author where boundaries don’t exist.
During the Q&A, Skarsgard was asked about the most memorable day of shooting, with the actor responding: “Fighting a naked version of myself to the death and then being breastfed by Mia… that’s not something you get to do very often as an actor.”
Infinity Pool will be available in theaters on January 27. You can have a glimpse through the trailer below.
