While most people only know Alex Winter for his role as Bill Preston Esquire from the Bill & Ted comedy franchise, Winter actually has a very impressive and extensive career as a director. Throughout his career Winter has directed several documentaries including the recent 2020 movies Zappa and Showbiz Kids. He has also directed a few non documentary projects including the the 1993 comedy movie Freaked, which he also starred in.
Now Movie Web reports that Winter is going to direct an upcoming documentary called Mass Effect: The Story Of YouTube. Despite the documentary’s title, it appears that the movie will actually not be related to the popular video game franchise that is also called Mass Effect. Instead this documentary will be about the origins and cultural impact of of the video sharing website Youtube.
Youtube has a rather humble origin story. It was originally created in the attic of a pizza restaurant. Now Youtube has become an enormous media sharing platform that shapes popular culture and permeates many facets of our society.
Mass Effect: The Story Of Youtube is a collaboration between the entertainment companies Trouper Productions, Valhalla Entertainment and Zipper Bros. Films. Production on the movie has already begun. The documentary is being produced by Gale Anne Hurd, Alex Winter, Glen Zipper. The movie’s executive producers are Phillip Kobylanski, Michael Cho, and Tim Lee.
