With the start of a criminal trial looming over him, Alec Baldwin is now accusing the District Attorney for violating his constitutional rights.
Baldwin’s defense team, Quinn Emannuel Urquhart & Sullivan, issued filing that stated, “The government’s conduct represented a disregard of its ethical duties, and it has threatened Mr. Baldwin’s right to a fair trial.”
Also involved in the killing of cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, is Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer. Together, her and Baldwin are facing a maximum of 18 months behind bars and up to $5,000 in fines if found guilty.
Earlier this year, Baldwin was able to remove prosecutor, Andrea Reeb, from the case because of her role as a Republican member of the Arizona state legislature. However, it was recently revealed Reeb asked Sante Fe District Attorney, Mary Carmack-Altwies, to “publicize the fact that she was working on the case in order to advance her political career.”
The filing by the defendant’s team said, “Representative Reeb’s prosecution of this case against Mr. Baldwin to advance her political career is a further abuse of the system and yet another violation of Mr. Baldwin’s constitutional rights.”
Despite this, Rust will be going back into production starting April 20, with Baldwin stepping back into the lead role and Hutchins’ widower Matthew Hutchins to serve as an executive producer.
While Baldwin was able to put the civil case against him on pause, Judge Mary Marlow Sommer will determine in May whether the criminal case will be moving foward to trial.
