Alec Baldwin to Join ‘Joker’ Cast

According to an exclusive by Deadline, Alec Baldwin is the newest cast member of Todd Phillips‘ upcoming Joker origin film. He joins other big names including Robert De Niro, Joaquin Phoenix, Frances Conroy, Marc Moron, and Zazie Beetz.

Although there is no clear answer as to who Baldwin will be portraying in the gritty, relatively low-budget film, talk around the recent casting says that he may very likely play the late father of Bruce Wayne, Thomas Wayne. Before Thomas and his wife’s untimely murder outside of a theatre (the plot point that leads Bruce toward vigilante justice), Thomas, according to DC canon was a popular physician and philanthropist in Gotham City.

Since the film will be based on the origins of the Joker, it makes sense that Baldwin would play Thomas at a time before his death. Although, again according to canon, the comic book killer of Bruce’s parents is Joe Chill, Tim Burton‘s 1989 Batman Movie created a plotline in which the Joker was the killer of Thomas and his wife.

We cannot be sure of which way that Phillips will go in his rendition of the classic super villain’s story, but we can feel comfort in knowing that we will find out eventually.

Baldwin has most recently been seen in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and BlacKkKlansman.

Joker is set to open on October 4, 2019.
