Universal is reviving the classic 1980s drama television series Miami Vice ’85, with a film adaptation directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, F1) from a script by Dan Gilroy (Velvet Buzzsaw, Nightcrawler). It has just announced that Alden Ehrenreich (Weapons, Solo: A Star Wars Story), fresh off his Tony win earlier this summer, has joined the cast.
Ehrenreich, who recently played a police officer in Zach Cregger’s Weapons, joins already attached actors Michael B. Jordan (Sinners, Black Panther) and Austin Butler (Caught Stealing, Elvis) in the upcoming take on the 80s IP that left its mark on pop culture. The film will take inspiration from the pilot episode of Miami Vice ’85. Deadline reports that the adaptation will explore the “glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami”. Gilroy’s script is based on characters from the original series.
Miami Vice ’85 will be filmed for an IMAX release with production to begin this year. The film will release in theaters on May 19, 2028.
