Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has now entered the VOD battle. Yesterday, the company announced that they will be partnering with ScreenPlus and Vista Cinema to launch Alamo On Demand, their new curated streaming platform.
Movie theaters, along with the greater entertainment industry, have been deeply affected by the coronavirus pandemic, with many questioning the future of theaters as a business. Alamo Drafthouse founder and Executive Chairman, Tim League, must be hedging his bets on the believe that streaming platforms can help support movie theaters. “Alamo On Demand helps us to continue the conversation past the theatrical window and recommend movies we love to our community,” League said about the new service, “And in these shuttered days and beyond, these rentals and purchases help support your neighborhood theater.”
Alamo On Demand will allow viewers to rent or purchase non-traditional films they may have missed in theaters. It includes such titles as Céline Sciamma’s romantic drama Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Bong Joon-ho’s Best Picture winner Parasite, Clark Duke’s directorial debut Arkansas, and a limited selection of independent films from Alamo Drafhouses’ own Fantastic Fest that typically takes place in Austin, Texas.
Alamo On Demand also features studio partners Lionsgate, NEON, Sony Pictures Classics, and Magnolia Pictures. It’s available right now if you are looking to scratch that movie itch with services other than Netflix and Hulu.
