Luca Guadagnino’s latest project is slated to release to audiences soon. But before it can hit a wide release, it debuted at the Venice International Film Festival, making quite the splash in the process. Dubbed After The Hunt, the film follows a college professor trying to come to grips with a student’s accusation that could not only ruin the career of a colleague, but could threaten her own career as well. Julia Roberts headlines the film, alongside Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Chloë Sevigny.
Hollywood Reporter noted that early reviews for the newest outing from the Challengers director have been less than stellar. Early reviews are mixed for After The Hunt, with an even split of a 50% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, out of 24 reviews. Even reviews from within the festival itself were mixed, as Hollywood Reporter also made note of.
Roberts herself did address how some viewers can come away with a sour taste after finishing the movie. She specifically mentioned that the main conflict of the film isn’t one that’s inherently new, but is one that can easily spark a debate.
“The best part of your question is you talking about how you all came out of the theater talking about [the film], and that’s how we wanted it to feel — that everybody comes out with all these different feelings, emotions, and points of view. You realize what you believe in strongly and what your convictions are because we stir it all up for you,” Roberts continued.
Despite the staggeringly even mix in critic reviews, once audiences saw the film, the reaction was overwhelmingly warm. Reports even state that there was a standing ovation from the crowd once the credits rolled, lasting longer than five minutes.
