Tom Ford is set to helm an adaptation of the 1982 Anne Rice novel, Cry to Heaven.
Ford wrote the screenplay and has an all-star cast of Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ciarán Hinds, George MacKay, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, Owen Cooper, and, making her acting debut, the 16-time Grammy winner, Adele. Additional cast members of the drama set in 18th-century Italy include Daniel Quinn-Toye, Hunter Schafer, Josephine Thiesen, Thandiwe Newton, Theodore Pellerin, Daryl McCormack, Cassian Bilton, Hauk Hannenmann and Lux Pascal.
Rice’s novel follows a Venetian noble and a maestro castrato, as both are trying their luck at succeeding in the opera world. A few of Rice’s novels have had film and television adaptations, such as Talamasca: The Secret Order, Interview With the Vampire, which has a film and TV adaptation, and Mayfair Witches, which is currently filming its third season.
Rice, who died in 2021 at age 80, published over 40 novels throughout her career and sold over 135 million copies, making her one of the most popular fantasy writers of all time. Her first book, Interview With the Vampire, was adapted in 1994 by Warner Bros. and starred Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Six of her other novels, such as Exit to Eden and Queen of the Damned, were also turned into movies or telefilms.
Ford will produce the adaptation, revealed at the American Film Market, through his production banner, Fade To Black. Cry to Heaven is in preproduction in London and Rome and set for production to begin in mid-January. The film is set for an autumn 2026 release.
