I saw “The Odyssey” the other day, it was great! Also, the source material for “The Illiad and “The Odyssey” are interesting. There are some other adaptations for these stories in Literature, Film and Television. My favorites are “Ulysses”, “Troy”, “O Brother Where Art Thou”, “The Spongebob Squarepants movie”, and a short from “The Simpsons”.
“The Illiad”
“The story centres on the critical events in the last year of the Trojan War, which lead to Achilleus’ killing of Hektor and determine the fate of Troy. But Homer’s theme is not simply war or heroism.” (Goodreads) This novel was a great war story. It was made into a film called “Troy”. There were epic battles. It has to do with ancient Greece. This is a prequel to “The Odyssey”.
“The Odyssey”
“Odysseus’ reliance on his wit and wiliness for survival in his encounters with divine and natural forces, during his ten-year voyage home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, is at once a timeless human story and an individual test of moral endurance.” (Goodreads)
In this Story Odysseus and his son go on a quest trying to return to his wife. They go on boats with an army of soldiers. They run into a
Cyclops. Later on, people are turned into pigs. I liked the movie because Christopher Nolan is a great director. Also the cast did a wonderful job. The music was good too. The cinematography was cool.
“Ulysses”
“Loosely based on the Odyssey, this landmark of modern literature follows ordinary Dubliners in 1904. Capturing a single day in the life of Dubliner Leopold Bloom, his friends Buck Mulligan and Stephen Dedalus, his wife Molly, and a scintillating cast of supporting characters, Joyce pushes Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes.” (Goodreads) In this book, Odysseus is similar to the protagonist Leopold Bloom. Telemachus is like the character Stephen Dedalus. Instead of the sirens with music, there was a bar with singing that the characters were lured into. Instead of fighting a Cyclops, the protagonist in “Ulysses” fights a character in a pub.
“Troy”
“An adaptation of Homer’s great epic, the film follows the assault on Troy by the united Greek forces.” (IMDb) This film is an adaptation of “The Illiad”. Some of the characters are Hector and Achilles. They mention Greek Mythology. The battles were awesome. Brad Pitt is talented in this movie. The director is Wolfgang Petersen.
“In the deep south during the 1930s, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.” (IMDb) This film is a retelling of “The Odyssey”. It takes place in the 1930s in the Southern United States. There is a blind man instead of a blind prophet. Also the protagonist’s wife has other suitors similar to the situation in “The Odyssey”. There is good country music in this film. The Coen Brothers are talented directors.
“The Spongebob Squarepants Movie”
“SpongeBob takes leave from Bikini Bottom in order to track down, with Patrick, King Neptune’s stolen crown.”(IMDb) Spongebob annoys King Neptune, There is a Roman God with that name similar to the Greek Mythology God Poseidon. In “The Odyssey”, Athena guides Odysseus. In this film, Princess Mindy guides Spongebob. You can read more about that here:

Theses are my favorite adaptations of “The Illiad” and “The Odyssey”. The books were intriguing, however they were dense. “Troy” with Brad Pitt was good, but I think this film will do better because it has a great director. Matt Damon is a talented actor too. The music in the new film was nice. I liked the cinematography. I felt immersed in the story. If you like the “Illiad” and “The Odyssey”, you might like these other films about Ancient Greece: “300”, “Clash of the Titans”, and “Hercules”.
“300”
“In the ancient battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fight against Xerxes and his massive Persian army.” (IMDb) Based on a Frank Miller graphic novel about Sparta. King Leonidas leads an army of 300 Spartans. They fight the Persians in this film. There was also a sequel. I liked the comics because they were about history, not about superheroes.
“Clash of the Titans”
“Perseus, a demigod and the son of Zeus, battles the minions of Hades and the Underworld in order to stop them from conquering Olympus and Earth.” (IMDb) There was also an older version of the film. The 1981 film is similar to the movie “Jason and the Argonauts” about a Greek Hero. They both used stop motion animation. They had some characters that moved frame by frame.
“Hercules”
“The son of Zeus and Hera is stripped of his immortality as an infant and must become a true hero in order to reclaim it.” (IMDb) A Walt Disney Animation Studios film about Zeus’ son. He trains with Phil, a Satyr, and likes a woman named Meg. The music is fun in this film. It was part of the Disney Renaissance era.
There is a lot of interesting culture from Ancient Greece. They had philosophy, theatre, The Olympics, and great food. They also have the Greek Orthodox church based there.
These last three films I mentioned have to do with Greek culture besides Homer’s Epics. I really enjoyed the new movie “The Odyssey”. I look forward to seeing how this film does at The Academy Awards.
There are multiple adaptations of Homer’s Epics. Also, there are some films with similar plots and themes. If you want to read Homer’s epics or “Ulysses”, you can find them at your library. These films can be found on streaming. Some other interesting ones about Rome, not Greece, are “Spartacus” directed by Stanley Kubrick and “Gladiator” directed by “Ridley Scott”. Greece and Rome are similar, but they have differences. Additionally, there is a good film about ancient Rome and Christianity called “Ben-Hur”. There is also a short from “The Simpsons” about “The Odyssey”.

Season 13 Episode 14 “Tales from the Public Domain”. The short is titled “D’oh, Brother Where Art Thou?” It features Homer Simpson as Odysseus. Marge is Penelope, his wife. Moe plays the Cyclops. Patty and Selma are the Sirens. It was just about 10 minutes, but it gave a good overview of the story.
