Jaume Collet-Serra’s 2009 cult psychological thriller Orphan is getting a prequel, and horror fans, myself included, are ecstatic. For those not familiar with the film, it tells the story of a husband and wife who recently lost their baby and adopt a seemingly normal 9 year-old girl, who ends up not being who she says she is.
Although Collet will not be returning to direct, it was just announced that Isabelle Fuhrman, who played Ester, is set to return. It was also disclosed that The Bourne Identity star Julia Stiles and Possessor actor Rossif Sutherland, half brother of Kiefer Sutherland, will be joining the cast as well. The film will be directed by William Brent Bell.
Orphan: First Kill, according to Deadline, will follow Esther, who is living under the fake name Leena Klammer. She “orchestrates a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility and travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. But Leena’s new life as ‘Esther’ comes with an unexpected wrinkle and pits her against a mother who will protect her family at any cost”. It has been over ten years since the film came out, and Fuhrman is now 23 years old. Due to this, the film will use “forced perspective shooting and a world-class makeup team” in order to make Fuhrman appear much younger.
The film comes from Dark Castle Entertainment and Entertainment One. Orphan: First Kill began filming this month.
