Hurry Up Tomorrow, a new film starring and conceived by Abel Tesfaye, or The Weeknd, has just released its first trailer. The film, which also stars Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan, is a psychological thriller film in which Tesfaye plays a fictional version of himself. He is a popular musician who is suffering from insomnia, so things just get weirder and weirder as the film goes on.
In the film, Tesfaye is pulled into a mind-bending odyssey by a stranger, presumably someone from his past. In the trailer, we hear the phrase, “Call me by the old, familiar name” repeated multiple times. The film is also supposed to coincide with his newest album release, also titled Hurry Up Tomorrow. The album features 22 tracks and was released just last month. Expect to hear many of the same songs in the film.
The film is being distributed by Lionsgate. It was directed by Trey Edward Shults (Waves, It Comes at Night) and was written by Shults, Tesfaye, and Reza Fahim.
Hurry Up Tomorrow may be falling in line with a little bit of a trend of concert-based thriller/horror films. Both Trap and Smile 2 released last year heavily featured concerts and pop stars as part of their respective film’s gimmick. Jenna Ortega has multiple projects coming out this year besides this film. Death of a Unicorn, a new horror comedy from A24, stars Jenna Ortega and releases a few months before Hurry Up Tomorrow. She also will star in season 2 of Wednesday on Netflix this year. Hurry Up Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on May 16.
