Abe Forsyth To Helm MGM’s ‘RoboCop’ Sequel

RoboCop Returns, the next entry in the iconic RoboCop franchise, will be directed by Abe Forsyth after moving on from Neill Blomkamp due to scheduling conflicts. MGM will be producing the film as it aims to clean the slate of previous sequels by only acknowledging 1987 classic directed by Paul Verhoeven. This will not be uncharted territory for MGM, given their previous revisions to franchises in 2018’s Halloween and, more recently, Terminator: Dark Fate.

Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, who wrote the script for the first Robocop, will be producing this new entry in the franchise. Forsyth will also handle the film’s screenplay alongside Justin Rhodes. This will be Abe’s first major project in comparison to his most recent project Little Monsters, which released briefly in the U.S until its eventual move to Hulu. The zombie comedy starring Lupita Nyong’o, just made its way to UK theaters this past week.

Recent success in soft rebooting classic franchises have been a series of hits and misses. Although 2018’s Halloween fared well in theaters, it still remains uncertain on the success with RoboCop. 2014’s RoboCop reboot starring Joel Kinnaman, by comparison, was heavily criticized when it was released to the point of being instantly forgettable. Hopefully, Abe’s vision is just the direction this franchise needs to give itself a restart.
