A24 could see a new record in their company’s history regarding film openings.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Civil War is on track to take over A24’s record for biggest weekend opening. Currently the 2018 film Hereditary holds the record at $13.6 million, but new figures show that Civil War could stand to make anywhere between $18 to $24 million during its opening weekend.
While the news is good for the independent film company, A24 itself predicts a $15 million opening. However, it does confirm that the studio thinks the film will do better than Hereditary in terms of openings.
The film is a big risk for A24, as the budget is around $50 million, the biggest production in the studio’s 12-year history.
Civil War will take place in a war-torn United States during the authoritarian rule of a third-term president and will follow journalists trying to cover the war. The film stars Kirsten Dunst (Hidden Figures), Nick Offerman (Dumb Money and Parks and Recreation), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), Wagner Moura (Narcos) and Jesse Plemons (Killers of the Flower Moon).
While the film recently debuted at South by Southwest on March 14, it will be released in the U.S. and U.K. in theaters on April 12, 2024.
