A24 Acquires Noah Baumbach’s ‘De Palma,’ Doc on Filmmaker Brian De Palma

A24 Films has acquired De Palma, the latest film from director Noah Baumbach (Mistress America) and directing partner Jake Paltrow (Young Ones). The film is documentary about acclaimed filmmaker Brian De Palma (Scarface, The Untouchables) who came to prominence in the 1970’s with the other directors of “The New Hollywood” that included Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies), George Lucas (Star Wars: A New Hope) and Martin Scorsese (The Devil in the White City).

The news comes after A24 released Amy documentary about the late-singer, Amy Winehouse. Amy became a box office phenom this past summer, becoming on the top-selling specialty titles of the year. A24 Films has been a roll this past year thanks that success as well as the impressive crossover film Ex Machina. In the meantime, Baumbach is coming off a busy 2015 having released two features: While We’re Young and Mistress America. De Palma premiered at the Venice Film Festival last week.

While De Palma is known for directing some of the most iconic films of the 70s and 80s, his more recent work has been much less frequent and less successful. De Palma rocketed to cinephile fame with iconic movies like Carrie and Blow Out; most recently the director filmed the mixed reviewed indies including Passion and Redacted. It remains to be seen by general audiences whether the film will focus on his later work as much as his earlier films. A24 is reportedly looking to the release the film some time next year. Before that, it will premiere at the New York Film Festival.
