The world of Danny Ocean is expanding once again, but this time the story is moving backwards. A new prequel to the Ocean’s Eleven installments is currently in development. With reports indicating that Bradley Cooper is being eyed to write, direct, and potentially star in the project following Lee Isaac Chung, the original director of the first Ocean’s Eleven.

The film had been in development for several years, originally attached to multiple creative directions from various directors that who have come and went. With a new opportunity to finally resolve the creative differences, the studio is now looking to Cooper as a multi-purpose filmmaker to lead the project forward. The prequel is expected to remain within wraps, potentially offering a new perspective on the origins of the iconic heist family.

Alongside Cooper’s involvement, Margot Robbie is also in talks to co-star and produce the project through her LuckyChap production company, which has been on a path to success ever since the release of Barbie. The screenplay has been developed by Carrie Solomon, with Warner Bros. backing the production. When finalized, the film would mark another major directing effort for Cooper, coming from projects like A Star Is Born and Maestro.

Potentially set in the 60’s, the prequel is expected to explore the origins of the Ocean’s heist crew and focus on the growth and rise of Danny Ocean. Exploring the mythology behind the series’ central setting, such as Las Vegas and Europe. This version would lean into a classical style, featuring an old-school con-driven plot that follows elaborate operations and schemes designed to show how to outsmart the system. Bringing in a filmmaker like Cooper signals a shift toward a director driven franchise, blending studio IP’s with a more personal creative voice. It also shows how studios are investing in recognizable stories while still aiming for cinematic execution.

If successful, the Ocean’s prequel could redefine how legacy franchises can evolve by going deeper into the stories that built them.
