A Minecraft Movie hit number one for streaming numbers after recently being added to HBO Max. The film, which starred Jack Black and Jason Momoa, became one of the highest-grossing films of the year after making $954 million at the global box office.
Despite being panned by many critics for minimalistic character arcs and story beats as well as poor visuals, the popularity of the video game and the meme-ification of the film online caused the film to massively overperform. Social media had a field day with the film’s trailers for months before release, mocking stilted line deliveries and cringey writing choices, but that only led to more people showing up to the theater when it released in March. Anyone online enough will remember people screaming, clapping and throwing popcorn whenever one of the infamous trailer lines such as “Chicken Jockey” or “Flint and Steel” played during that opening weekend. So, a combination of fans of the video game (the best-selling video game of all time) and people looking to get in on the trend created what is a historic and infamous opening weekend.
Now, the film, has hit HBO Max, and it became the number one film on the platform. With the wild success of the film, a sequel has already been greenlit at Warner Bros. In an interview with the director Jared Hass, he said this about the idea for a sequel: “We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”
