A Minecraft Movie has unexpectedly become the box office hit of 2025 as it grossed over $909 million dollars from just six weeks in theaters, with a domestic sum of around $408.9 million and $500.6 million in the overseas box office. With such a performance, the feature, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, has placed seventy-five overall in The Numbers’ All-Time Worldwide Box Office list. A Minecraft Movie surpasses blockbusters like 2005’s Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and 2001’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which placed seventy-sixth and seventh-eighth, respectively.
If the film keeps up a performance like this in the box office, one could speculate that it could hit a billion. There has only been one other video game adaptation that has reached a billion in the global box office, and that was 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. But fans should probably keep hopes of making it to the billion milestone on the backburner, as this recent weekend, A Minecraft Movie only brought in around $7.7 million in the domestic box office.
The feature still has a while before it is placed on streaming and DVD, so it is still possible that the film could make the billion mark, but with the present performance, that goal just seems a little too high.
