The Oscars ceremony aired live from Los Angeles tonight, announcing the big winners of the cast and crew of the films of 2019. The ceremony once again went without a host, however, a star-studded presenter list and musical guests helped make up for the lack of one leading voice. Though this year the Academy has once again been criticized for failing to boost representation for women and people of color, it is still a massively viewed event celebrating the best in cinematic arts of the year.
Joker came in with the most nominations, totaling at 11, but the biggest winner of the night was Parasite, which totaled 4 wins. 1917 clocked in at a close second with 3 wins. Parasite‘s popularity this awards season is a big win for international film, considering that the ceremony is usually very US-centric, though it looks like that is beginning to change after this and last year’s award season run for Roma.
