Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…
These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.
What a weird week. It was a week dominated by second (and third) theatrical trailers for a number of high-profile films. So we’ve got a few of those, but we also tried to sniff out some worthwhile new footage as well.
#5 – The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Theatrical Trailer 2
This spot was basically a tossup among Mitty, a third theatrical trailer for Inside Llewyn Davis, and second trailers for Out of the Furnace, American Hustle, and The Monuments Men. In the end, Davis still looks great, but it’s had its time in the spotlight and still isn’t out for two months. Mitty remains the most enigmatic of the rest, and for the moment that’s enough to take down this spot.
#4 – The Invisible Woman Theatrical Trailer
One of the originals, this story of Charles Dickens and his secret lover drew mixed reviews at its premier, but looks a very capable period piece and one of the all-too-rare opportunities to see the talents of Felicity Jones.
#3 – Charlie Countryman Theatrical Trailer
Our other new piece on the countdown, this Shia LaBeouf-starring movie looks full – and maybe overful – of plot and tonal swings, but is at the same time one of the most intriguing previews we’ve seen in a little while.
#2 – Diana Theatrical Trailer 2
It hasn’t been getting good reviews, so maybe the trailer’s coyness is telling, but it’s somewhat shocking that this turned out badly (if it indeed has).
#1 – Philomena Theatrical Trailer 2
Judi Dench looks delightful. Steve Coogan looks to be a great foil to show off her character. This movie may prove a bit melodramatic, but I’m guessing it’ll be hard to accuse it of not being heartfelt.
