’23 Jump Street’ Gets Green Light, Writer

In a move that should surprise absolutely no one, Sony has announced that they are going ahead with 23 Jump Street, the third movie in the popular Jonah Hill-Channing Tatum action-comedy franchise. As first reported by Deadline, the studio has hired Rodney Rothman – one of the writers credited on 22 Jump Street – to pen this new sequel.

What remains to be seen is whether Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the directing team behind the first two movies, will come back to direct a third time. They are however definitely going to oversee the writing of the script and will stick around as producers on the new movie. Lord and Miller are also responsible for launching another mega-franchise, as they were the directors on the The Lego Movie, which has sequel of its own in the works. The heavily in-demand duo also famously turned down an opportunity to direct a third Ghostbusters movie.

Rothman’s other credits include Grudge Match and another Jonah Hill movie, Get Him to the Greek.

In the end credits of 22 Jump Street was a tongue-in-cheek list of planned sequels for the franchise, which included 23 Jump Street: Medical School. Whether it was just a joke or not, we’ll have to wait and see.
