As the December release date approaches, there has been little word about Assassin’s Creed, the adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise. There were rumors that the first trailer for the film would be attached to Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but that fell through. A few still photos have been unveiled over the past few months, showing both the modern and historical settings that the story takes place in. And just to sweeten the pot before we can get our hands on the first official footage, 20th Century Fox has liberated a few more enticing photos.
Similar to the video games, Assassin’s Creed begins in the modern day, following an imprisoned man named Callum Lynch who is told about his ancestors who supposedly were notorious assassins. And due to highly sophisticated technology, Lynch is able to travel back in time to 15th Century Spain and live out certain moments in Anguilar’s life, one of the most famous in his family. Michael Fassbender takes on the dual-role of Lynch/Anguilar, with Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons starring in supporting roles.
The new photos released give us another great look at Anguilar’s fantastic fighting ability, not to mention the fantastic costume design. But the other photo shows the darker, mysterious storyline of the modern day, where Lynch is strapped to a gurney and possibly being observed or monitored by unknown superiors. Even if we haven’t received a trailer yet, these brief looks are enough to satisfy anyone worried about how the original source material would look when taken to the big screen.
Assassin’s Creed hits theaters on December 21, 2016.
