Like most other film events this year, the 2020 Telluride Film Festival has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the United States experiencing recent spikes in cases. The 47th edition of the festival was previously scheduled for September 3-7, 2020 and annually attracts around 5,000 attendees in addition to media and critics from Los Angeles and New York.
While organizers of the festival held on to the hope of holding a physical event, already unable to use two key festival venues, Palm and Galaxy theaters, and with local concern of further spreading cases with a deluge of outsiders coming from various states, the outcome was unlikely.
“After months of intense due diligence around physically holding an event, we’ve come to the heartbreaking but unanimous conclusion to cancel this year’s Labor Day celebration of film in Telluride,” the festival said in a statement on Tuesday. “But with a seemingly unending number of new cases of Covid-19 and the national chaos around it, even the best strategy is threatened by this out of control environment.”
However, like Cannes, despite the cancelation, the Festival will soon release its official selection, to recommend “the best in film this year,” in the hopes that its audience will view the films at other major fall festivals taking place in New York, Toronto and Venice.
