Jon Hamm and Miramax are teaming up to work on modern-day reboot of Fletch, the 1980s comedy thriller starring Chevy Chase, based on Gregory McDonald’s mystery novels. Miramax revealed the project on Wednesday, which is based on the second book in McDonald’s series, Confess Fletch.
Hamm will star as I.M. Fletcher, the titular character who is a quick-witted, hotshot investigative reporter, originally played by Chevy Chase.
“Fletch’s duration over audiences — whether told on paper or the big screen — entertains all and we could not be more thrilled to see what twenty-first century twist these artists create,” said Miramax CEO Bill Block.
The story revolves around Hamm’s Fletch character who mysteriously finds himself in the middle of multiple murders, one of which has him pinned as a prime suspect. In an attempt to prove his innocence, Fletch also has to find his fiancée’s stolen art collection, which she inherited after her father goes missing and is presumed dead.
In addition to starring, Hamm will also produce the movie along with manager and producer Connie Tavel. Greg Mottola (Superbad, Arrested Development), will direct, with Zev Borrow writing the script. David List is set to serve as executive producer of the film.
“Producing this film with Jon has been a long-time dream of mine and with Zev and Greg on board to write and direct, I really believe that this will be an exciting and modern reimagining of this beloved character,” said Tavel.
